Democratic Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, the leading Democratic candidate for governor of New Mexico, made hundreds of thousands of dollars from the state’s high-risk pool insurance program.

The state’s high-risk pool program, established to cover those with the most serious pre-existing conditions, charges much higher prices than those covered can get on the individual insurance market, Politico reported Wednesday. (RELATED: The Federal Government Will Spend $685 Billion Subsidizing Health Care In 2018)

The program is managed by the Delta Consulting Group, which Grisham and the treasurer of her gubernatorial campaign, Debbie Armstrong, co-founded. The company was paid over $2 million for its role in the program between 2014 and 2017.

Though Grisham sold her shares in the company last June, she earned between $165,000 and $350,000 from 2013 to 2016 off of dividends from the firm.

Armstrong is currently the chairwoman of the Health and Human Services Committee of the New Mexico House. The committee tabled a bill that would have limited use of the high-risk program.

Most states have gotten rid of their state-run high-risk insurance pools since insurance plans can’t discriminate against those with pre-existing condition sunder Obamacare.

Grisham is currently leading her Democratic rivals in the gubernatorial primary, with the support of 57 percent of Democratic primary voters, according to a local poll released Sunday.
