The National Rifle Association has released its grades for the 11 candidates running for governor in Maine, awarding all Republicans top ratings and all Democrats failing scores.
Each of the seven Democratic contenders were given F grades, the lowest possible score. Poor grades are expected to be a further selling point for the Democratic base. (RELATED: NRA Membership Soars Past The Six Million Mark)
During Tuesday’s Democratic debate, all candidates pledged to promulgate gun control issues. Front-runner Janet Mills has come under fire for signing a firearms bill when she was a state representative, however, she “reiterated her support for banning so-called ‘bump stock’ additions to firearms as well as large-capacity ammunition magazines,” reported the Portland Press Herald.

Of the four Republican hopefuls, State Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason was awarded an A+, the NRA’s finest rating, while State House Minority Leader Kenneth Fredette was awarded an A. Since neither Mary Mayhew nor Shawn Moody have voting records, they were awarded an AQ, a score determined entirely from the NRA’s questionnaire.
Scores are determined by the Political Victory Fund, which is the NRA’s political action committee. The organization ranks political candidates “irrespective of party affiliation – based on voting records, public statements and their responses to an NRA-PVF questionnaire,” according to the NRA’s website.
