Today, June 6, marks the 74th anniversary of D-Day. It also marks the 34th anniversary of President Ronald Reagan’s famous “Boys of Pointe du Hoc” speech, where he commemorated the infamous battle that will forever remain in the collective American conscience.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 40 years since Reagan stood at the U.S. Ranger Monument at Pointe du Hoc, France, and addressed patriots and the victors of World War II. The speech was delivered at one of the most high-stakes points in American history: during the height of the Cold War.
Yet Reagan called D-Day, codenamed Operation Overlord, one of the “most difficult and daring” invasions known to mankind. And he was absolutely right. Reagan’s words still echo with meaning throughout Europe and across the United States. And taking a moment to remember one of the largest amphibious attacks known to mankind is every proud American’s duty today.
