Peter Navarro, President Trump’s trade advisor, expressed regret for controversial comments he made about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday.

Navarro said “there’s a special place in hell” for leaders like Trudeau in an interview on Fox News Sunday, following tense meetings between the U.S., Canada, and other world-leading countries at the G7 Summit over the weekend.

Following their annual CFO Network event, The Wall Street Journal tweeted that Navarro regretted his comments, calling them “inappropriate” and a “mistake.”

“Navarro on his comments: says his job last Sunday was to send a signal of strength. “In conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message. I own that, that was my mistake, my words.”

The president was in Canada last week and partially over the weekend for meetings with world leaders at the G7 summit to discuss trade and other pressing international matters. He then left the summit early to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, which occurred Monday. (RELATED: Sec. Mattis: ‘All’s Quiet’ In The North Korean Military)
