Democrats have spent more than Republicans on Affordable Care Act-related advertisements during an election cycle for the first time since 2012.

Pro-Obamacare ad spending totaled $13,950,400 during the election cycle from Jan. 1 to June 30, while anti-Obamacare ad spending totaled a slightly lower bill of $13,441,570 over the same time period, reported the Huffington Post. The numbers were recorded by the self-described “nonpartisan” experts of Kantar Media’s Campaign Media Analysis Group.

Now Democrats seem to be scared Obamacare policies could slip away after upcoming national elections. Pro-Obamacare ad spending almost topped $4 million in June alone, compared with just over $1 million spent on anti-Obamacare ads that month. The Democrat-funded ads tend to be negative ads taking aim at Republican politicians who want to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, reported the Huffington Post. Anti-Obamacare ad spending totaled more than $40 million a year from 2012 until 2016, when the numbers started to drop sharply. Pro-Obamacare ad spending has climbed slowly but steadily from less than $10 million in 2014 to this six-month election cycle’s spending that almost reaches a $14 million bill.

The Affordable Care Act became law in 2010 during former President Barack Obama’s first term. Many Republican lawmakers have campaigned on repealing and replacing Obamacare. Republicans have come close to ditching the Affordable Care Act since gaining control of Congress in 2016 but have never quite accomplished that goal. The GOP did eliminate Obamacare’s individual mandate with a tax reform bill in late 2017.
