MSNBC host Joe Scarborough asked if Republican Rep. Devin Nunes of California should face “consequences” in this year’s midterm elections, for trying to hold the federal government’s bureaucracy accountable.

Most Americans are tired of the Russia narrative and want to focus on more important issues, Scarborough said Monday but then attacked Nunes for his involvement in confronting corruption within federal agencies. (RELATED: Joe Scarborough Sides With Spies And Calls Nunes Memo A ‘Sleazy Political Purge’)

“For most Republicans, for most Americans, this Russia investigation is something they just, you know, kind of don’t want to hear about,” Scarborough said on “Morning Joe” Monday. “They’ve got more important things to worry about. I understand that.”

“But it seems to me in Devin Nunes’s district, I know there are good Republicans out there, good conservatives out there that have seen that their representative has spent his time in Congress over the past two years undermining the Federal Bureau investigation,” he continued. “Attacking their agents, undermining the intel agencies and actually revealing sources and methods to [the Islamic State], to Al Qaeda, to ex-KGB agents to America’s worst enemies. Any consequences for Devin Nunes in that race?”

“Morning Joe” guest John Heilemann said Nunes is still up by eight points in a recent Public Policy Polling (PPP) poll and admitted PPP is biased in favor of Democrats.

“Well, we’ll see about that. But I will say that for the first time Devin Nunes has lived in a safe Republican district for a pretty long time,” he replied. “Their most recent polling, a PPP poll that came out in early July [showed] only an eight-point lead over his Democratic rival and under 50 percent — 49/41 in that poll. It’s a Democratic-leaning polling firm to be fair, but I know a lot of Democrats who are looking at that seat and saying ‘Devin Nunes is vulnerable and we’re going to put some money in to try and take him out.'”
