CNN’s “New Day” accused President Donald Trump of acting like “1984” author George Orwell Wednesday and said the White House would only be able to fool “Fox News viewers.”

Co-host Alisyn Camerota ran a clip of Trump speaking to veterans at an annual Veterans of Foreign Wars meeting Tuesday, where he claimed the media wasn’t reporting what was actually happening. (RELATED: Dan Bongino Says No One Has Been Tougher On Russia Than President Trump)

“Yes it is what’s happening,” Camerota said. “It actually is what’s happening. What you’re seeing with your own eyes and what you’re hearing with your own ears. That was President Trump yesterday turning into George Orwell in 1984.”

Conservative commentator Max Boot agreed with Camerota’s Orwellian description and referenced the story of the White House allegedly changing the transcript of Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also mocked Fox News viewers and suggested they were the only ones “gullible” enough to fall for Trump’s dirty tricks.

“You’ve been talking about how Orwellian this is, and I think that’s the right word,” Boot said. “[Trump is] re-writing the past. Now of course he’s doing it in such a ham-handed and ridiculous way. I really don’t know who they think they’re going to fool unless it’s Fox News viewers, who seem to be endlessly gullible and willing to accept whatever the president says.”

These accusations of rewriting history were debunked by The Washington Post in an article entitled: “No, The White House Didn’t Intentionally Edit A Question To Putin Out Of A Video.”

“At some point in the middle of that question, there’s a switch between the feed from the reporters and the feed from the translator,” WaPo’s national correspondent Phillip Bump wrote in the piece. “In the White House version of the video, you can hear the question being asked very faintly under the woman who is translating saying ‘president.'”

“This is not a conspiracy from the White House,” Bump added.
