Former NFL player Martellus Bennett hammered President Trump’s outspoken criticism of national anthem protests by calling it an attempt to “attack the culture of black people.”

“It’s the easiest way for him to attack the culture of black people,” Bennett told Bleacher Report in an interview published Wednesday.

“He sees the black athlete as someone that black people look up to, so he thinks you can attack black culture by attacking black NFL players,” said the former NFL pro-bowler.

Bennett then managed to slam not just President Trump, but “his base” as well.

“Also, attacking black players helps him with his base,” said Bennett, who won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2017 and famously did not visit the White House with the rest of the team. “I think, too, maybe there’s no rhyme or reason. Maybe he’s just an asshole.” (RELATED: Patriots’ Tight End Martellus Bennett Will Refuse Visit To White House After Super Bowl Win)

In his retirement, Bennett has been a frequent critic of President Trump.
