World’s Oldest Person Dies At Age 117

The world’s oldest person died at age 117 just a few days after officially being recognized by Guinness World Records.

Chiyo Miyako, born May 2, 1901 and known as “the chatty goddess” by her family, died Sunday at the age of 117 in Japan, the Daily Mail reported Thursday. Miyako was approved for the Guinness World Records titles oldest person living and oldest living female just a few days before her death, according to Guinness World Records.

Miyako’s family described her as patient and kind, according to the Daily Mail. Her husband Shoji worked for the Japanese National Railways, which gave her an interest in traveling.

She was fond of calligraphy after being taught the writing style as a child. The world record holder also loved eating sushi and eels. (RELATED: World’s Oldest Man Celebrates 113th Birthday)

Masazo Nanoka, 113, from Asoro, Japan, holds the title for being the world’s oldest man. Nanoka just turned 113 Wednesday. He was awarded the title in April.

Jeanne Louise Calment was recorded as the world’s oldest person ever by Guinness World Records. She died at age 122 in 1997.
