Russian President Vladimir Putin extended an invite to U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday during a summit of BRICS countries in South Africa, saying that he wants to discuss issues of international importance in-person.
Although both presidents have been in contact by phone since their joint summit on July 16 in Helsinki, Putin believes that issues such as the Iran nuclear deal and violence in the Middle East, among others, should be discussed in a better setting with “the right conditions for work,” according to Reuters.
“Regarding our meetings, I understand very well what President Trump said. He has a desire to have further meetings, to hold further meetings. I am ready for that. We need for the appropriate conditions to exist, to be created, including in our countries,” Putin said during a news conference in South Africa.
Since the backlash from Trump’s visit to Helsinki on the topic of Russia’s potential interference in the 2016 elections, the White House has since invited Putin to Washington, potentially in 2019. “We are ready for such meetings. We are ready to invite President Trump to Moscow. By all means. By the way, he has such an invitation, I told him about that,” Putin told reporters Friday. “I am ready to go to Washington. I repeat once again, if the right conditions for work are created.”
