Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California said Monday that he’s considering running for president in 2020.

“Well, I’m going to do all I can first to win my way back to Congress,” Swalwell told CNN’s Poppy Harlow when asked about his potential candidacy. “And then after the midterms, Poppy, I am going to consider [a run for president].”

The California congressman, who has taken 10 trips to Iowa over the past year and a half, says his primary goal leading up to midterms is to win re-election and to help a handful of other Democratic candidates “who are stepping up to protect our health care, protect paychecks and protect the democracy” win re-election as well. (RELATED: Eric Swalwell Defends Firing Of Peter Strzok)

After accusing President Donald Trump of taking “a wrecking ball to so many freedoms” that provided Swalwell the opportunities to succeed in America, the congressman explained why he thought he would make a suitable president.

“I was raised to believe that if you work hard, it means something,” Swalwell explained. “And I think that having experience and energy to give Americans a health care guarantee, invest in modern schools, make sure that we green our grid and our infrastructure, that, that is the path forward and that the future for our country is a page forward.”
