An illegal immigrant who is charged with murdering his girlfriend in Shakopee, Minnesota, has a criminal history and had been previously deported to Mexico.

Fraider Diaz-Carbajal, 35, stabbed his girlfriend, Enedelia Perez Garcia, 27, to death during an argument on August 12 and then tried to kill himself by slashing his own throat. Diaz-Carbajal was hospitalized in critical condition and was booked into jail on Monday.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement that they have placed an immigration detainer on Diaz-Carbajal. They also noted that Diaz-Carbajal has a criminal history consisting of numerous misdemeanor convictions, including three DUIs and one for domestic assault. He was deported to Mexico in 2012.

“Since then he illegally re-entered the United States, which is a felony. He remains in local custody pending adjudication of his criminal charges,” ICE said.

A witness to the murder said she saw Diaz-Carbajal stabbing Garcia on the bed and then watched as he cut his own throat and stabbed himself in the abdomen multiple times.

Garcia had a seven year old daughter.
