Fox Business show “Varney & Company” host Stuart Varney criticized Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, after her former employer announced it’s closing due to wage hikes.

Ocasio-Cortez used to work at “The Coffee Shop” at Union Square in New York City as an entry-level employee, according to Varney, and he condemned her for pushing policies that helped close the storied business. (RELATED: Stuart Varney Views Venezuela As A Warning To American Socialists)

“This is a real life example of what happens, what damage can accompany our society when you’ve got $15 an hour minimum wage,” Varney said on “Fox & Friends” Thursday. “There are going to be fewer jobs and this is a classic example of that.”

“Ms. Ocasio-Cortez goes back to the coffee shop … and found that it’s about to close. Why is it about to close? Because it’s going to $15 an hour minimum wage,” he continued. “And the manager can’t afford to run that business with that kind of pricing structure for his labor.”

Varney said it’s ironic for Ocasio-Cortez to support hiking the minimum wage, only to see those same policies put her former employer out of business.

“It’s ironic, isn’t it,” Varney said. “That Ms. Ocasio-Cortez supports $15 an hour minimum wage, goes back to where she was started out in life in the workplace and finds it’s closing because of the policies she supports. That’s irony.”

Varney also said the shop’s manager will be on his show Friday about the backlash he’s facing on social media for deciding to close.
