The lawyer for the illegal immigrant who murdered 20-year old Mollie Tibbetts in Iowa tried to dispute the facts Thursday. He argued during a bizarre interview on “The Story” With Martha MacCallum that his client was not illegally in the United States.

“People are buying into the concepts and notions that Mr. Trump is bringing forward, and at this stage in the process, it’s not proper. I think there is a misconception of what the role of a defense attorney is. My role is to vigorously represent Cristhian [Rivera],” Allan Richards, Rivera’s lawyer stated.

MacCallum responded, “[ICE and his employer] consider him an illegal immigrant from Mexico, and I fail to see how that fact isn’t — it’s just a fact — if he was from Colorado and lived there for 20 years, we would know that. But we know that he is an illegal immigrant who arrived from Mexico and has lived in Iowa for four and seven years. So, I fail to see how that’s irrelevant.”

Rivera led investigators to the body’s location after confirming that he interacted with her while she was running and she felt threatened by him. Rivera said he “blacked out” at some point during their interaction, officials said. (RELATED: Illegal Immigrant Charged With Murder Of Iowa College Student Mollie Tibbetts)

“That’s rhetoric. The United States constitution provides, if you are not a citizen, you still entitled to the jurisdictions of the court, and entitled to equal protection under the law,” he added. “You want to jump to say they are facts. Have these people been under oath? Have these people provided the opportunity for Cristhian [Rivera] to present his point of view on the matter?”

“It’s not a point of view question. Either he’s here legally, or he’s not here legally. It’s really not a point of view question,” she fired back.
