Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman Tom Perez, after dodging questions on Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison earlier in the day, on Thursday distanced the DNC from a “review” of domestic abuse allegations against Ellison.

Ellison’s ex-girlfriend, liberal Sierra Club activist Karen Monahan, accused Ellison of physically and emotionally abusing her during their relationship, which ended in 2016. Ellison has denied Monahan’s allegations.

In addition to being the deputy chair of the DNC, Ellison is the Democratic nominee for Minnesota attorney general. (RELATED: Bernie Sanders Was Asked About The Keith Ellison Domestic Abuse Allegations. Here’s What He Said)

While the DNC previously said it was “reviewing” the Ellison allegations, Perez placed that responsibility on the Minnesota Democratic Party while speaking with CBS News’s Ed O’Keefe on Thursday.

“I’m in touch with Congressman Ellison. He is campaigning this weekend because he has an election in 75 days or so. We take all allegations of sexual misconduct very, very seriously and that’s something that we’ve always done and something we’ll always do and that’s why the matter is under review,” Perez said.

When asked if the DNC ever discussed having Ellison step aside from the DNC, Perez replied, “I mean, the matter is under review and the Minnesota Democratic Party is conducting a very thorough investigation and a very prompt investigation and I’m very confident that review will be completed in the near future.”

Perez refused to answer questions about Ellison earlier on Thursday when asked by a tracker with Republican opposition research group America Rising.
