New York Times columnist Tom Friedman said President Donald Trump had “chutzpah” to criticize the late Sen. John McCain’s war record since he dodged the Vietnam war.
“Just as when Donald Trump sat there and said, you know, ‘I like heroes who aren’t captured.’ That always shocked — that really surprised me too,” Friedman said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Monday. (RELATED: Sen. Ron Johnson Walks Back McCain Comments: ‘He’s Not Impaired In Any Way’)
“I didn’t think someone could actually — someone who had dodged the Vietnam war actually could have the chutzpah to say that,” he added.

Friedman accused Trump of failing to give McCain a proper sendoff and said McCain was much more fun to cover from a journalistic standpoint.
“What is the deepest contrast for me between these two men today is, Trump always surprises you on the downside. Even this morning, not having the decency to give a proper tribute to him as president. He always surprises you on the downside,” Friedman concluded.
“McCain surprised us on the upside and as a journalist that made covering him fun and interesting.”
