Saturday is the first day of fall, a season when Americans and tourists alike go leaf-peeping, take hay rides, pick apples and enjoy harvest festivals in a scenery of foliage and crisp autumn air.

The Berkshires

Acadia National Park is deemed to be most beautiful in late September and October. Tourist season will have waned by September, allowing visitors to have more of the park to themselves to leaf-peep. The park’s many wonders include a breathtaking view atop Cadillac mountain, famous mouth-watering popovers at Jordan Pond House, erupting water at Thunder Hole and the countless hiking trails for all levels.
Fairs and Festivals
Visit the Oklahoma State Fair. The fair runs from Sept. 13 to Sept. 23 and offers a number of activities like rollercoasters, pig races, ice cream stands, bull riding competitions and an array of food, from pizza on a stick to deep-fried pickles. The fair boasts lots of activities for youngsters as well, including mini-golf and petting zoos.

The 168th Tuscarawas County Fair in Dover, Ohio, runs from Sept. 17 to Sept. 23. A truck and tractor pull, demolition derby and performance by country star Rodney Atkins are a few of the fair’s big attractions. A list of its daily events can be found here.
Maryland residents can attend Ocean City Sunfest, St. Mary’s County Fair during the first fall weekend. Sunfest offers fresh seafood, pit beef, funnel cakes and a myriad of games. Pig racing, carnival rides and an extensive food court are among the offerings at St. Mary’s Fair.
Louisville’s Bourbon & Beyond is perfect for people who want some good music, food and fun. The Kentucky festival runs from Sept. 22 to Sept. 23, featuring headliners John Mayer, Lenny Kravitz, Robert Plant and Sting. The festival is open to anyone ages 5 and older.
