New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo labeled the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency as “a bunch of thugs,” at a primary election debate Wednesday night.

The comments come as Cuomo faced liberal actress Cynthia Nixon in a heated Democratic primary debate at Hofstra University, where the two constantly attacked each other. During the debate Cuomo blamed President Donald Trump for the separation of illegal immigrant minors from their family, declaring the state would not cooperate with ICE.

“New York state is the state that is suing Donald Trump for ripping babies from the arms of their mothers, New York state is the state that says we will not cooperate with ICE, they’re a bunch of thugs,” Cuomo said. “We said we will sue them if they violate any criminal laws in the state of New York.”

Cuomo’s comments sounded similar to previous calls by Nixon to abolish ICE. “They’re becoming such a destructive force in our country that we must eradicate them,” she said in June. (RELATED: ‘We Must Eradicate Them’: Cynthia Nixon Calls For Dismantling Of Immigration Agency)

The New York Democratic primary between Nixon and Cuomo will take place on Sept. 13. Cuomo leads Nixon by 33.5 points, according to RealClearPolitics.
