A judge ordered a New Jersey couple Thursday to hand over the rest of the GoFundMe money they raised for a drug-addicted homeless man to their lawyer.
A judge mandated Katie McClure and boyfriend Mark D’Amico’s lawyer to put the rest of the $400,000 they raised for homeless veteran Johnny Bobbitt through their GoFundMe campaign in an escrow account while the case proceeds, the New York Post reported. The couple originally started the campaign after Bobbitt spent his last $20 to buy gas for McClure when she was stranded on the side of a highway in 2017.
McClure and D’Amico set up the GoFundMe campaign for Bobbitt Nov. 10, 2017, with a goal of raising $10,000. However, Bobbitt ended up blowing through a significant portion of the money to buy drugs, claiming that he went through $25,000 in two weeks in December 2017, The Associated Press reported. The couple held off from giving him the rest of the money until he got off drugs. Bobbitt is once again drug-addicted, panhandling and homeless living under a side of a bridge. “Giving him all that money, it’s never going to happen. I’ll burn it in front of him,” D’Amico told the Philadelphia Inquirer prior to the court ruling. He also claimed that giving Bobbitt money would be like “giving him a loaded gun.”
Bobbitt said they instead used the money for themselves and his lawyers filed a lawsuit Tuesday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
