Vice President Mike Pence delivered a powerful speech on what former Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain meant to his country at his Friday remembrance ceremony.

“The president asked me to be here on behalf of a grateful nation to pay a debt of honor and respect to a man who served our country throughout his life, in uniform and in public office,” Pence said. “As President Trump said yesterday, we respect his service to the country,” he continued.

Pence’s comments come after McCain requested Trump not attend his funeral, as the two disagreed over certain policy issues. However, Trump did say “we appreciate everything that Senator McCain has done for our country,” after McCain died. During Pence’s speech, he praised McCain for his service during the Vietnam War, where he was captured and tortured as a prisoner of war, before returning home safely and serving in the U.S. Senate for 35 years.

McCain will be buried at the U.S. Naval Academy cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland, on Sunday.
