Jennifer Rubin Drills Sen. Sasse For Putting Football First Over McCain — But He Didn’t

Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin took a moment to call out Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse on Saturday when it appeared that he was attending a college football game rather than the funeral of his colleague, the late Sen. John McCain.

It seemed especially odd, considering the moving and personal tributes Sasse posted upon McCain’s passing, that he wouldn’t attend the memorial service.

And Sasse was certainly not shy about the fact that, on Saturday, he was in the stands at the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ home opener. He tweeted throughout a long rain delay about the game, even giving a nod to those who were present at the National Cathedral.

But what Rubin forgot was that Saturday’s memorial service was neither the first nor the only service held in honor of John McCain, who last Saturday succumbed to brain cancer at the age of 81.

And Sasse, who was already committed to the football game he attends annually in his home state — he’s been selling Runza sandwiches at the home opener since 1983 — attended the service held in Phoenix a few days earlier.
