Dozens of homes in several communities north of Boston went up in flames Thursday evening after a series of gas explosions rocked the area.

Between 60 and 100 fires started after the explosions. Police ordered customers of Columbia Gas in the towns of Lawrence, North Andover and Andover to evacuate their homes, The Washington Post reports. (RELATED: North And South Carolina Declare State Of Emergency As Florence Bears Down)

Firefighters have put out roughly 35 fires in Andover, town officials told CNN.

At least six patients injured by the explosions are being treated at a nearby hospital. At least two are in critical condition. One firefighter was injured responding to the explosions, CBS Boston reports.

All power to Lawrence, North Andover and Andover has been cut at the request of emergency officials and Columbia Gas is in the process of depressurizing all gas lines in the area. The cause of the explosions is not known.
