Former New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie came forward to defend Judge Brett Kavanaugh against accusations of sexual assault Monday and said the political “bloodletting” from Democrats is hurting the Senate.

Christie said the Democrats pushing back against Kavanaugh have a credibility problem and specifically cited Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California. (RELATED: Sen. Jeff Flake ‘Not Comfortable Voting Yes’ On Kavanaugh After Accuser Comes Forward)

“At this point they can’t be seen as credible, especially, you know, Sen. Feinstein’s conduct in this is also questionable in terms of the way it was handled,” Christie said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Christie also said GOP Sens. Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska will be among those who play a crucial role in the final vote and agreed Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Blasey Ford should be interviewed.

“It’s going to come up to … folks like Sen. Flake, Sen. Corker, Sen. Murkowski, Sen. Collins. What do they consider to be a fair and thorough review? She’s certainly going to have to be interviewed,” Christie said. “Whether that’s just by staff or maybe some select members of the Senate, and/or the FBI. That’s probably going to have to happen at a minimum.”

Christie said it was unfair to have an allegation that is almost 40 years old come forward to derail Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“I think the other thing that we would talk about, and obviously the professor here needs to be heard — needs to have her allegations looked at, but also this is extraordinarily unfair to Judge Kavanaugh,” he concluded.

“This is an allegation that’s 35 plus years old, and now you’re going to attempt to try to deal with that in a very truncated period of time. This is why people are reluctant to get in front of those committees, George, and sit down for Senate confirmation. Because this kind of bloodletting … The bloodletting is on both sides unfortunately in situations like this.”
