Special Counsel Robert Mueller asked a federal judge on Monday to schedule former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn for sentencing as early as Nov. 28.
Flynn pleaded guilty on Dec. 1 to making false statements to the FBI during a White House interview on Jan. 24, 2017. The retired lieutenant general acknowledged giving false statements about his contacts in December 2016 with Russia’s ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.
Flynn was fired on Feb. 13, 2017 for lying to Vice President Mike Pence about whether he discussed sanctions with Kislyak. Flynn reportedly denied doing so, though transcripts of Kislyak’s intercepted phone calls told a different story. (RELATED: Papadopoulos Sentenced To 14 Days In Jail)
Flynn will be the third person sentenced as part of the Mueller probe. Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos was sentenced to 14 days in jail on Sept. 7 for giving false statements to the FBI in an interview on Jan. 27, 2017. Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in the case on Oct. 5, 2017.
Alex van der Zwaan, a London-based lawyer who worked with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, was sentenced to 30 days in prison on April 3. He pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI during an interview about work he did for Manafort on behalf of the Ukrainian government.
