Beto O’Rouke is sorry he wrote a theater review that mentioned the “phenomenally large breasts and tight buttocks” of its female cast members, Politico reports.

The candidate for the U.S. Senate wrote the review in 1991 for the Columbia Daily Spectator about the musical “The Will Rogers Follies,” but a political opponent directed Politico to the piece Monday, it noted.

O’Rourke was 19 years old at the time, and he called the musical “one of the most glaring examples of the sickening excesses and moral degradations not our culture.”

The show was “produced and directed in such a showy, glitzy, and ultimately, tacky manner, that one cannot help feeling disgusted throughout the show,” he wrote. “Keith Carradine in the lead role is surrounded by perma-smile actresses whose only qualifications seem to be their phenomenally large breasts and tight buttocks.”

“I am ashamed of what I wrote and I apologize,” he said in a statement. “There is no excuse for making disrespectful and demeaning comments about women.”

The Democratic congressman has made a strong showing in his bid to defeat incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz but has been dogged by other events in his past, including accusations of a DUI incident.
