The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) targeted a A Maryland councilman over Facebook posts openly rejecting Allah and suggesting a ban on Islam in schools.

CAIR demanded that Councilman John Grasso of Anne Arundel County Council’s District 2 remove his posts, saying that they were anti-Islamic and that Muslim district members had complained that they felt unsafe as a result of the posts. Grasso refused to remove them on the basis that they were not his personal views and that he supports Muslim citizens as much as he supports free speech. “One nation under God, not Allah,” one of his posts read. “America is not a Muslim nation. America is not an Islamic nation. America is a Christian nation.”

Grasso removed his post sharing the article suggesting that President Donald Trump ban Islam in schools as well as the post declaring that America is not a Muslim nation Thursday morning.

Grasso initially defended his posts, saying that he had simply shared content that someone else posted, according to CBS Baltimore.

“I don’t treat anybody different than anybody else. I see a person until proven different,” Grasso said.

The councilman also said that he had not considered deleting the posts.

“No, because I believe in freedom of speech and people have the right to say what they are going to say,” he said.

Zainab Chaudry of CAIR lambasted the posts as “reckless” and “dangerous.”

“There are members who live in his district who are concerned about their safety,” Chaudry said.

“It is extremely reckless and dangerous especially when we consider that fact that elected officials have a responsibility to treat all of their constituents equally and fairly regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity or national origin,” he added.
