A New York City substitute teacher allegedly threatened to burn a student with a lighter if he did not finish an assignment in time on Tuesday.

Alexander Jorge, 47, allegedly walked around a New Millennium Business Academy Middle School classroom with the lighter, telling a 13-year-old he would get burned if a three-page assignment was not finished in 20 minutes, authorities said, News 12 The Bronx reported Thursday. The student got a bruise on his arm after Jorge allegedly got too close to the student with the lighter.

It is unclear whether the student was treated for the bruise at a hospital, according to News 12.

Jorge said the accusations were false, The New York Post reported.

“Think very clearly about how you want to put my name in the media,” Jorge said to The Post.

Jorge was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment after the student’s parents filed a report Wednesday, according to the Post. (RELATED: Florida Teacher Claims She Was Fired For Refusing To Give 50 Percent To Students Who Did Not Hand In Work)

He has been a substitute teacher since 2014, according to officials, News 12 reported.

New Millennium Business Academy is a school in Bronx, New York, that serves 345 students between sixth and eighth grades, according to New York City’s Department of Education website.

“These are deeply troubling allegations, and we immediately suspended this substitute teacher without pay pending the resolution of his criminal case,” Education Department spokesman Dough Cohen said in a statement to News 12.
