Democrats never stopped “digging” for a reason to disqualify Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh from the position, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said in an interview with Fox News’ Martha MacCallum Tuesday evening.

“Even on the day that [Kavanaugh] was going to be voted to the Supreme Court, there were still people digging around to find some reason that this guy shouldn’t be on the court,” Grassley told Fox News.

The Iowa Republican also said he hopes Kavanaugh’s critics do not try to impeach the justice.

“I don’t think it’s a wise thing to do,” Grassley told Fox News. “I don’t think they’ll find the basis for impeaching.”

The Senate voted to confirm Kavanaugh 50 to 48 Saturday.

“Even though it took longer than the average Supreme Court justice takes … I think we still had a fair and thorough [process],” Grassley told MacCallum Tuesday.

It took 89 days to confirm Kavanaugh, second in length only to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ confirmation process that took 99, reported the Miami Herald.

Grassley’s office faced a “deluge of threats” as he oversaw multiple hearings involving Kavanaugh, including testimony from Christine Blasey Ford. (RELATED: Kelley Paul Points To Criminal Justice Reform As The Way ‘Hyper-Partisan’ Washington Can Learn To Work Together)

Ford alleged that Kavanaugh pinned her down and attempted to remove her clothing when they were both minors. Kavanaugh has continued to deny any allegations of sexual assault.
