Nikki Haley made a stunning declaration Tuesday morning that she would be resigning from her position as Ambassador to the United Nations — but it’s the resignation letter she wrote days earlier that seems to blow a hole in at least one of the theories that has immediately begun to swirl.
The date of the letter, October 3, is important since some reporters on Twitter were openly theorizing that Haley resigned due to the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh was confirmed Saturday and ceremonially sworn-in Monday night, days after Haley’s letter was delivered.
The Washington Post obtained a copy of Haley’s resignation letter soon after the presser. In the message, Haley thanked President Donald Trump for the opportunity to serve and for keeping his promises. Haley outlined how proud she was at the work the U.N. team had accomplished and also made a comment about a potential 2020 run. “I expect to continue to speak out from time to time on important public policy matters, but I surely will not be a candidate for any office in 2020,” Haley wrote, bolstering the claim she made in the Oval Office press conference — namely that she would be happy to support and campaign for Trump’s reelection in 2020.

Haley said in her comments to reporters:
It is a great day in the United States and I’m proud to have been part of the team — I’m a believer in term limits. I think you have to be selfless enough to know when you step aside and allow someone else to do the job. Thank you, Mr. President. It has been an honor of a lifetime.
Haley officially announced her resignation at the press conference where a grateful Trump said she could come back “in any capacity.”
“We’re all happy for you in one way but we hate to lose you,” Trump responded.
