MSNBC incorrectly reported on Monday night that conservatives were responsible for initial funding of the Steele dossier detailing Trump’s ties to Russia.

MSNBC aired a special called “The Meeting” about Russian collusion on Monday night and discussed the Steele dossier, much of which remains unverified.

“The allegation is in the Steele dossier, opposition research initially paid for by a conservative website, and then paid for by Democrats,” MSNBC anchor Ari Melber claimed.

The Washington Free Beacon did pay Fusion GPS for opposition research in 2015.

However, as The Daily Caller previously reported, “In spring 2016, the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee took over payment for the opposition research. Fusion GPS did not contract with Steele to compile the dossier until after the Free Beacon ceased payment.”

Free Beacon Editor-in-Chief Matthew Continetti said that none of the work that his organization paid for appeared in the Steele dossier.
