A study released Wednesday on the breakdown of America’s political factions concluded that the most militant progressives come from a small, mostly white, relatively wealthy and educated sliver of the population.
The report, entitled “Hidden Tribes: A Study of America’s Polarized Landscape,” surveyed American attitudes toward hot-button issues like immigration, sexual harassment and white privilege. Authors of the study argued that most Americans fit into seven separate categories: devoted conservatives, traditional conservatives, moderates, the politically disengaged, passive liberals, traditional liberals and progressive activists.
Despite active protests in Washington, D.C., during the confirmation process for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the study’s authors found that “some 8 percent of Americans are progressive activists, and their views are even less typical,” according to The Atlantic.
According to the report, “progressive activists are much more likely to be rich, highly educated — and white. They are nearly twice as likely as the average [American] to make more than $100,000 a year,” and “are nearly three times as likely to have a postgraduate degree.” (RELATED: Marxists And Extreme Radicals Seek To Take Over The Democratic Party)
Left-wing activists are also significantly less diverse than the U.S. population. The population sample in the study was 12 percent African-American, whereas they only made up 3 percent of the category.
As The Atlantic notes, the notion that activists are disconnected from groups they purport to represent is supported by additional data outside the study as well. A poll by the Pew Research Center found that only 26 percent of black individuals identify as liberal.
