New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez is being called out as a “hypocrite” in an ad released by his Republican opponent Bob Hugin for believing Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s sexual assault accuser even though Menendez faced allegations of sexual relations with minors.

The ad comes as Menendez was one of the first senators to publicly say he believed Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who accused Kavanaugh of high school-era sexual assault. After an FBI investigation could not find corroborating evidence of the claims, Menendez said “if that’s an investigation, it’s a bullsh*t investigation.”

However, years prior, a Department of Justice investigation against Menendez turned up with “corroborating evidence” that Menendez and a South Florida eye doctor, Salomon Melgen, used underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. An FBI investigation, however, did not find corroborating evidence on this specific claim.

In the ad released Monday, Hugin calls out Menendez for his hypocrisy in relation to the two issues, asking Menendez about the underage girls who accused him of sexual misconduct and why their voices do not deserve to be heard.

The ad also mentions that it was former President Barack Obama’s DOJ who had evidence that Menendez was allegedly traveling to the Dominican Republic for several years to engage in sexual activity with minors. (RELATED: DOJ: Underage Prostitution Allegations Against Robert Menendez Backed By ‘Corroborating Evidence’)

Menendez’s case went to a mistrial for a second time in November 2017 after the jury was deadlocked on the 18 counts in the indictment and he was not convicted. (RELATED: MISTRIAL: Menendez Escapes Conviction After Jury Deadlocks)

The claim against Menendez is included in a 65-page motion filed in 2015 with the U.S. District Court of New Jersey.

Hugin announced his support for Kavanaugh in a tweet Oct. 5, saying, “Based on everything I know now, I would support Judge Kavanaugh as Senator. I still strongly believe the FBI report should be released so the American people can see the findings.”

Hugin and Menendez’s race is tighter than expected in the deep blue state. Menendez was ahead in the polls by over 7 points as of Monday, according to Real Clear Politics.

Menendez’s office did not respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation when contacted.
