The political world was bewildered when Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren released DNA test results to The Boston Globe on Sunday.

Warren, who has long been ridiculed by Republicans for claiming Native American heritage, had never released verification for her decades-long claim of being part Cherokee.

The results showed that she may have between 1/64 and 1/1,024 Native American heritage, though the test that did not use Native American DNA for matching, and instead used Colombian, Mexican and Peruvian DNA.

The Cherokee Nation issued a statement on the issue, saying what Warren was doing “wrong” because it “dishonors legitimate tribal governments and citizens whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven.”

It continues:

Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage.

In spite of all of the pushback Warren has received for the new defense of her claims to be a Native American, some in the media have continued to defend her. (RELATED: Elizabeth Warren Has Statistically Less Native American Blood Than Average White American, According To Study)

The Daily Caller traveled to the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC to ask patrons and visitors if Warren belongs in the museum.
