Travis Scott reportedly spoke with Colin Kaepernick prior to news breaking that the star rapper would do the Super Bowl halftime show.
Scott was confirmed as a performer a couple days ago, and part of the deal to get his appearance was a $500,000 donation to a non-profit for social justice. Variety reported the following Tuesday night:
Scott and Kaepernick had at least one phone conversation before the rapper confirmed his Super Bowl appearance, sources tell Variety. A source close to Scott said that while the two did not necessarily agree, they emerged from the conversation with mutual respect and understanding, with the rapper taking the stance that everyone makes a statement in their own way and he felt that the money going toward Dream Corps, combined with the platform provided by the Super Bowl, will do some good. The source also said that Scott would not confirm his performance until the donation was locked in.
I would love to get a transcript of this conversation. The fact Scott and Kaepernick didn’t agree should tell you that the star rapper apparently might not be lock step with the former 49ers quarterback.
That’s a bit surprising to me because it has seemed like the entire rap industry has wholeheartedly embraced the national anthem protester.

I really hope Scott doesn’t get too political during the show. The Super Bowl has done an outstanding job of keeping the show pretty relaxed, and I don’t think that’ll change anytime soon.
Trust me, the NFL viewers don’t want to watch some musicians give speeches about how chill Kaepernick and the national anthem protests are.

I already said I think this halftime show will suck, but we’ll have to wait and see if I’m correct. Anything other than a political act will do, and it sounds like Scott has no plans to tread into that water.
