On a nearly party-line vote, the House passed a $4.5 billion bill to send additional funding to the southern border.
President Trump first requested an additional $4.5 billion in funding for humanitarian aid at the southern border in May. The Senate passed the bill with a near bipartisan vote last week, clearing the Senate Appropriations Committee with a 30-1 vote for a $4.6 billion aid package.
But Democrats in the House wanted additional stipulations that included assurance that these funds would not be used to buy additional beds for already over crowed detention centers, increased congressional oversight including the ability for any congress member to visit a site without prior notice, and additional protections for sponsors of unaccompanied migrant children. This bill passed in the House with a 230 – 195 vote. Only three Republicans voted in the bill’s favor, while four Democrats voted against it, believing the funds will inevitably be misused.
But now Trump is suggesting that he may veto his own budget request due to these new stipulations.
