It’s no secret Jimmy Kimmel adores David Letterman.

He proved just how much influence his fellow late night host had on him Tuesday when he dedicated six minutes of his show to the 68-year-old, whose last show airs Wednesday night.

Kimmel says he used to draw pictures of Letterman on his school textbooks, and on his 16th birthday his mother baked him a “Late Night with David Letterman” cake.

“My first car, I went to the DMV and I got a ‘L8 NITE’ vanity plate.”

“I watched the show every night and never missed it, and little did I know that many years and many pounds later, that watching the show was a great education for me. I learned almost nothing in college. I really didn’t. But watching ‘Late Night,’ not only did I learn how to do everything from Dave, the reason I have this show is because the executives at ABC saw me when I was a guest on Dave’s show and hired me to host this show,” Kimmel said with tears in his eyes.

“I want to thank Dave and his writers and his producers.”

Kimmel encouraged his viewers to tune into Letterman instead of the rerun of his show that will air.
