U.S. intelligence has learned al-Qaida may be planning terror attacks in the U.S. for the day before the election, sources told CBS News.

Al-Qaida is believed to be plotting attacks in New York, Texas and Virginia, sources told CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton. U.S. intelligence has alerted counterterrorism officials to the potential attacks. No specific locations were mentioned.

The sources told CBS the threat is being taken seriously, but its credibility has not been confirmed and the intelligence is still being assessed. Joint terrorism task forces were warned of the threat out of an abundance of caution, they said.

“The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States,” a senior FBI official told CBS News. “The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety.”
