West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin said that he would be open to supporting President Trump during the 2020 presidential election, Politico reports.

“I’m open to supporting the person who I think is best for my country and my state,” Manchin said in the interview with Politico. “If his policies are best, I’ll be right there.”

He added, “A lot of the policies he’s done [have] been good for the state.”

Manchin is running for reelection in a state that overwhelmingly voted for President Trump in 2016, with him winning by more than 40 points.

“I’m with him sometimes more than other Republican senators are with him,” Manchin stated.

The West Virginian senator was quick to support the president’s nominee to head the CIA, Gina Haspel, and he also supported Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court, two battles that almost exclusively went down party lines.

“It was a mistake,” Manchin said about continuing to support Hillary Clinton in 2016. “It was a mistake politically.”

Manchin did add that this will be his last election.

Manchin has considered switching political parties in the past to help his chances of winning his bid for reelection with Trump having such a stronghold on the state. The current governor of West Virginia, Jim Justice, ran as a Democrat but became a Republican last summer. Governor Justice has said he’s tried to convince Manchin to join the party. (RELATED: Jim Justice Says He’s Talked To Joe Manchin About Switching Parties)

Manchin will be going up against Republican Patrick Morrisey in November.
