President Trump made a joke about what the world would be like if he drank alcohol while speaking with reporters at the White House Monday.
Trump took questions from the media after announcing a new trade deal reached between the United States, Mexico and Canada (USMCA). One of the questions centered around the drinking habits of Trump’s embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh has been accused of abusing alcohol as a young man and committing sexual assault. A reporter asked if Trump believed Kavanaugh “lied” about his drinking.
“I don’t think he did,” Trump said emphatically. “I’m not a drinker. I can honestly say I’ve never had a beer in my life. OK? It’s one of my only good traits. I don’t drink,” Trump said to uproarious laughter from the guests at the ceremony.
The president continued, “Whenever they are looking for something good, I say, ‘I’ve never had a glass of alcohol. I’ve never had alcohol.’ For whatever reason. Can you imagine if I had? What a mess I would be? I would be the world’s worst.”
The audience again broke into laughter.
“But I never drank,” Trump continued, defending Kavanaugh, “Nobody said anything bad about him in many years. They go back to high school … I really believe that he was very strong on the fact that he drank a lot, so I don’t know whether there’s a big discrepancy.”
When the reporter challenged Trump’s answer, the president said, “You’ve had enough,” and moved onto the next question.
Trump went on to say the Democrats accusing Kavanaugh were not “angels.”
“I watch those senators on the Democrat side and I thought it was a disgrace. Partially because I know them. I know them too well. You know what? They are not angels,” Trump said of the Senate Democrats.
