Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pushing President Joe Biden to hire former Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney of New York as Labor Secretary, according to Politico.

Pelosi has been making phone calls to the Biden administration advocating for Maloney to take the recently vacated position, replacing Martin Walsh, Politico reported. While no longer speaker, she still holds tremendous power in the Democratic Party and has been yielding that power to advocate for other members of the party like Maloney, according to Politico.

Maloney lost his reelection bid in the 2022 midterms, and also failed to keep the Democratic majority in the House as Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair.

The former five-termed congressman conceded to Republican opponent Mike Lawler after trailing him in the polls, in a race where New York’s congressional districts were redrawn. He was initially elected to Congress in 2012.

Maloney had been serving as the chair for the Democrat’s campaign committee since 2020, whose purpose is to ensure Democrats are elected to the House and keep the chamber’s majority.

President Biden announced Walsh’s resignation on Feb. 17, as he heads to lead the National Hockey League’s Players’ Association, Politico reported. (RELATED: Former NYC Mayor De Blasio Wants To Be Biden’s Next Labor Secretary)

Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, succeeded by Mayor Eric Adams, is another contender for the vacancy. De Blasio, who has relationships with labor unions in New York City, has been making phone calls to those close to the president to lobby for the position.

Pelosi’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
