A mother of two tragically fell to her death in California earlier this month after attempting to save a teen who had slipped and fallen on a hike, authorities say.

Sarah Louise Crocker, 48, died June 8 after a hiking accident at the Three Sisters Falls in the Cleveland National Forest outside of San Diego, ABC 10 News reported.

Crocker had reportedly been hiking the area with four teenagers whom she was supervising when one of the teens, slipped and began to fall, officials with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release. When Crocker moved to prevent the 15-year-old teen from falling over the ledge, she also fell, landing in the bottom-most pool of water of the tiered waterfall, according to ABC 10.

Crocker reportedly suffered from multiple blunt-force injuries from the fall into the pool which ultimately caused her to drown, the outlet reported. When emergency personnel located her, they attempted to resuscitate her but were unable to do so. The 15-year-old teen sustained severe but non-life-threatening injuries in her fall and was transported to a local hospital by helicopter, the sheriff’s office stated.

Crocker was a Field Naturalist with The Nature Reserve and loved spending time outdoors. “When she isn’t hiking a mountain peak or backpacking with her friends and family, she is making art,” a biography for her reads.

Remembered as “pure joy” and an “amazing human being,” Crocker leaves behind two children and her husband, a GoFundMe page for the family reads.

The Three Sisters Falls hike is listed as a moderate to strenuous 4.5 miles hike that “takes hikers through several ecosystems before leading to the main event – three large waterfalls wedged between tall, rocky mountains.”
