Researchers announced Tuesday the suspected detection of dozens of previously unknown large objects just beyond the Kuiper Belt, way out in the reaches of our solar system.
The Kuiper Belt is a ring of trillions of objects just beyond the orbit of Neptune. It’s where Pluto lives, for example. But a story published Tuesday in Science details how there may be a second ring of much larger objects, almost like a “second Kuiper Belt” way out beyond.
The discovery was made during a search for 12 potentially enormous objects by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, in a region more than 50 times further from the Sun than we are today. Researchers working in conjunction with New Horizons and the Subaru Telescope on Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano sifted through huge amounts of data to come up with the discovery, and it is pretty much blowing the minds of many astronomers.

The creepiest thing is that, whatever is out there, is pulling objects from the Kuiper Belt towards it. Some think it could be these multiple larger objects. But others are not so convinced. (RELATED: Recovered Meteorite Could Be Alien Technology, Harvard Astrophysicist Avi Loeb Claims)
“If there really is a new belt, that’s a super exciting thing,” researcher and survey lead for a similar project, Pedro Bernardinelli, told the outlet. But then “Why are we not seeing these things? Did everyone get unlucky? It’s possible, but it’s hard.”
There’s more data to come, so hopefully we get a clear answer soon.
