CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten said Thursday that President Joe Biden’s chances of winning reelection may hinge on voters who dislike both Biden and former President Donald Trump.

A new Quinnipiac University poll found Biden leading Trump by 6 points, his biggest lead in a national poll in more than a year, Enten explained. Former South Carolina governor and presidential hopeful Nikki Haley was ahead of Biden in the general but still trailed Trump in the primary. The poll also found the number one issue for voters who were polled was democracy followed by economy and immigration.

“So is he getting more popular? Why, why the turn in the numbers?” CNN’s Phil Mattingly asked.

“Why the turn in the numbers? Phil, this is something I have been talking about a lot. Favorable view of Biden or Trump — just 40% of registered voters have a favorable view of Joe Biden. Just 37% have a favorable view of Donald Trump,” Enten explained. “It’s this 24% that we’ve been watching that have a favorable view of neither Donald Trump nor Joe Biden, and how are these voters going? This the key block that I’m gonna be keeping my eye on in poll after poll after poll. Choice for voters among those like neither Biden or Trump — Joe Biden ahead by 13 points.”

“If this number holds, Joe Biden will be reelected. Of course, it switches from poll to poll,” Enten continued.

“And whoever wins that number likely to be president of the United States?” Mattingly asked

“Exactly,” Enten said. (RELATED: CNN Data Reporter Harry Enten Says Key Dem Demographic Trending ‘Toward Donald Trump’)

Biden’s lead is a stark contrast from a December 20, 2023 poll in which the general election matchup was “too close to call” as Biden received 47% support and Trump received 46%.

Biden is also seeing an increase in support from female voters, with women supporting the incumbent over Trump 58-36%, up from December’s 53-41%, according to the Quinnipiac University poll.

While Biden leads Trump amongst independent voters, Haley leads Biden 53-37% in that category.

The poll was conducted amongst 1,650 self-identified registered voters nationwide between January 25-January 29 with a +/- 2.4 percentage point margin of error.

Trump, however, is leading Biden on the economy and immigration in the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, a Bloomberg/Morning Consult Survey found.
