Obama was visiting the Silver Spring school and sitting in a circle with a group of 12 children when the girl told her, “My mom said . . . Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers,” according to a videotape of the session.

Obama replied, “That’s something that we have to work on, right? To make sure that people can be here with the right kind of papers.”

The girl said, “But my mom doesn’t have papers.”

Obama replied, “Well, we have to work on that. We have to fix that. And everybody’s got to work together in Congress to make sure that that happens.”

The first lady was visiting the school with Margarita Zavala, first lady of Mexico.

A Montgomery County school spokesman said the district will not reveal the girl’s identity.
