Bill and Marge Focht said they only saw their elderly neighbor when she took old chairs and other discarded items that residents had put out for trash collection and dragged them into her home or yard.

“When we first moved here, she was friendly and we could talk to her,” Marge Focht said Tuesday. “As the years went by — the last 20, I would say — it was a whole different ballgame. She became very private and didn’t associate with any of us. She was very reclusive.”

“The debris was stacked upward of 6 feet,” Krupnik said, adding that authorities believe Davis was a hoarder. “It was various things but it was sufficient to support someone to crawl on top of.”

Marie Davis, 79, was found dead Monday evening under a pile of debris in a small brick-and-wood bungalow stuffed with trash in the 5400 block of Foster Street in Skokie, said Sgt. Michael Krupnik.
