The pearls are “absolutely non-negotiable,” according to Meryl Streep in her newest role as Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming film “The Iron Lady” set to hit theaters December 16.

Streep, 62, has been nominated 13 times for Best Actress by the Academy, although she has not won an Academy Award since 1983, despite having 16 nominations — a Hollywood record.

The film trailer just released features two political advisers offering the British prime minister advice from off screen about what would make her more politically acceptable.

“That hat has got to go, and the pearls,” says one of the political advisers. “The main thing is your voice: it’s too high and has no authority.

“I may be persuaded to surrender the hat,” Thatcher responds. “The pearls, however, are absolutely non-negotiable. That’s the tone we want to strike.”

The film, produced by the Weinstein Company and shot by Pathe, hopes to capture an intimate portrait of Thatcher, who “came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world,” according to a May 13 press release.

The real Thatcher refused to help with the film or to meet with Meryl Streep.  Thatcher feared that the film would distort her 11 year premiership, according to The Daily Mail.
