Media Matters for America founder David Brock has emerged as the preeminent defender of Hillary Clinton in the wake of her recent email scandal, even battling fellow liberals on MSNBC over the issue.

But Brock’s own organization, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, once attacked another Democrat and a potential Clinton rival for exactly the same behavior. (VIDEO: Halperin Grills Media Matters Founder: Should America ‘Blindly Trust’ Hillary Clinton?)

The staff of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo came under scrutiny in May of 2014 for using private emails, in violation of state law. In response, the liberal-leaning CREW issued a press release calling for an investigation into the issue.

“Government officials who use private email or untraceable text message to keep their dealings secret from the public that elects them and funds their salaries and whom they claim to represent must be held accountable for their conduct,” said CREW director Melanie Sloan. “If Governor Cuomo doesn’t want voters to know what he’s doing, maybe he is doing something he shouldn’t.”

A few months later, Brock replaced Sloan as chairman of the board of CREW. Since then, Cuomo has remained listed as the CREW website as one of the “Worst Governors in America.”

The entry faults Cuomo and his aides for going “to great lengths to avoid using e-mail for official business in order to avoid disclosure requirements.” (RELATED: David Brock Angrily Resigns From Pro-Hillary PAC)
