A kindergarten teacher in Greensboro, N.C. resigned this week over allegations that she washed a student’s mouth out with soap.
The teacher, Tiffani Staton, had worked at Wiley Elementary School since 2013, reports regional NBC affiliate WNCN.
Staton, 31, resigned on Wednesday, the same day school administrators contacted police.
The unidentified child’s father contacted police on Tuesday with allegations of the — presumably — disciplinary action.
“We are deeply concerned that this occurred,” a Guilford County school district statement obtained by WNCN said. “There is no reason to discipline a child in this manner at school. We expect our 10,000 employees to show only the greatest care and concern for our students, and the vast majority of our staff do so each and every day.”
The Wiley Elementary website no longer lists Staton as a teacher.
Parents in Greensboro expressed shock at the allegations.
“When you take your child to school, you trust that they’re in the best of care and you don’t want anything done to them that you wouldn’t do,” veritable parent on the street Setaria James told Charlotte FOX affiliate WJZY-TV.
“Why would a teacher do that?” an anonymous PTA member asked, according to WGHP-TV. “Nobody deserves that.”
Late this week, a police spokesman said Staton will not face criminal charges because the student’s parents, the police and school officials decided Staton’s resignation was an effective resolution.
