The problems continue for the Rio 2016 Olympics ahead of the Friday opening ceremony with officials breaking into their own stadium on Wednesday after losing the keys.
Individuals claiming to be ‘firemen’ used bolt-cutters to get into a stadium for the Olympic Games before a soccer game. The bolt-cutters solution to the embarrassing snafu came about after soccer fans had to stand in line for a couple of hours and were shepherded into the stadium in an entrance which wasn’t the main, locked entrance.
Lost keys are just the peak of the iceberg when it comes to the multiple displays of inept planning just ahead of the Olympic Games getting underway. Protecting the Olympic Torch has been a challenge for planners in the months ahead of Rio 2016 and officials failed their duties in July when protesters successfully extinguished the flame.
Housing facilities that have been built for athletes in the Olympic Village are likely to be a disaster during the Games given the public and highly critical feedback of both the Australian and New Zealand teams. Australian Olympic Team Leader Kitty Chiller put her concerns very simply regarding plumbing and electrical issues at the Olympic Village, saying, “Electricity and water is not a good combination.” New Zealand’s Mahe Drysdale, who claims to be the first Olympian to have walked into the Olympic Village stated that the facilities are missing some “finishing touches.”
Inept officials and unfortunate athletes aren’t the only ones facing problems as a result of the inept planning of the Games, tourists have also voted with their money by not attending. Fears over contracting the mosquito-borne Zika virus which can cause birth defects has in part been a major cause for 1.3 million tickets to Olympic events remaining unsold.
