Horrifying dash cam footage captured the final moments of a small plane as it careened to earth, killing all five on board Monday morning in Malta.

The dash cam footage was posted to Facebook by Laurent Azzopardi, who wrote, according to ABC News, “On my way to the work this morning – a very shocking experience, a plane crash”

The victims were three defense ministry officials and two private contractors, the French defense ministry told ABC News. The ministry said the officials were conducting a surveillance operation.

Malta’s government said that the flight was part of a French customs operation tracing illicit trafficking from Libya, where the plane was headed. A popular radio station in Malta, the plane was a military aircraft, according to 89.7 BAY.

The flight was part of a five-moth French customs operation, Maltese officials said in a statement. The operation was tracking illicit drugs, human trafficking and other illegal activities. The plane was registered in the United States to the company, Worldwide Aircraft Services. The Maltese government said it had been leased to a Luxembourg company.

“I saw the plane go vertical. It was coming at a very fast speed,” Azzopardi told CNN. “It kind of turned and planted into the ground.” All five victims were French nationals, according to CNN.

Human error or technical fault is most likely to blame, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told parliament Monday evening according to the Times of Malta.
